The Power of Scents: How fragrances impact our moods, emotions and memories.

Last week, a customer came by Twig's booth at the Sechelt Artisan's market.  She picked up on of our candles (not telling you which one!), smelled it and said, "Ugh, this reminds me of my ex-husband).  She put the candle down and walked away (missed sale!).   Ten minutes later, someone else smelled the exact same candle.  She had to buy it, as it reminded her of her husband (I am assuming not an "ex" husband).

If you have ever caught a whiff of your favorite perfume or smelled the aroma of freshly baked cookies, you know how a scent can instantly put you in a better mood. But have you ever wondered why? What is it about scents and fragrances that have such a powerful effect on our emotions?  Let's explore the psychology and science behind smells and how they can impact our wellbeing, evoke memories, and create a sense of calm.

Our sense of smell is incredibly powerful and can evoke emotions and memories that we thought were buried deep in our subconscious. The olfactory system in our brain is directly linked to areas that control our emotions, memories, and behavior. When we smell a familiar fragrance or scent, it can trigger an emotional response that can transport us back to a specific time and place in our lives. That's why the smell of your grandmother's perfume may remind you of holidays spent with her as a child, or the scent of fresh cut grass may trigger memories of playing in the park with friends.

The science behind aromatherapy is based on the idea that inhaling certain scents can have a therapeutic effect on our emotions and wellbeing. For example, lavender has long been touted for its calming properties and is often used in essential oils and candles to help promote relaxation and ease stress. Similarly, peppermint is known for its invigorating and energizing effects, which can help boost productivity and improve focus. With so many different essential oils and fragrances available, there is a scent for every mood and occasion.

Interestingly, two people can smell the same fragrance and have completely different emotional responses to it (think about my example at the top of this post).   That's because scent preferences are largely shaped by our experiences, associations, and memories. For example, if someone had a traumatic experience associated with the scent of roses, then the smell of a rose may trigger fear and anxiety. Conversely, if someone was given a bouquet of roses as a romantic gesture, the smell may evoke feelings of love and happiness.

Scented wooden wick candles, room sprays, and reed diffusers are all ways that we can bring invigorating scents and fragrances into our homes and space. With so many options on the market, it can be overwhelming to know which product to choose. However, candles are a timeless classic and can add a touch of warmth and ambiance to any space. Room sprays are perfect for a quick boost of fragrance and can be used throughout the day. On the other hand, reed diffusers are ideal for a more subtle and long-lasting fragrance that can infuse your space continuously.

Businesses like hotels and spas have long known the impact that fragrances can have on their clients. Creating a calming and luxurious atmosphere is essential in these industries, and scent plays a crucial role in achieving this. By choosing an inviting fragrance for their space and amenities, hotels and spas can create a memorable experience for their clients that they will look forward to experiencing again and again.

In conclusion, the scents and fragrances we choose have a significant impact on our emotions and wellbeing. Whether you prefer floral, citrus, or woody scents, there is a fragrance for every mood and occasion. The next time you're feeling stressed or anxious, try lighting a lavender-scented candle or diffusing peppermint essential oil. You may be surprised at how quickly the right fragrance can transform your mood and help you relax. Remember, scent is a powerful tool that can help evoke memories, create a sense of calm, and positively impact our lives, one sniff at a time.
